Daily 5 word work with a new twist!!! SCRABBLE word work will delight your students while building vocabulary and flexible word-solving skills!
Using their Word Work Journals, students date their page and then copy down the actual word work phrase onto the first line at the top of the paper.
Next, students cut apart the letter tiles and manipulate the letters to create new words. Each time the children make a new word, they add it to the list in their journal. (I always challenge my students to find at least 25 new words!)
Now the scrabble twist... after creating a new word, instruct your students to total up the numbers on the letter tiles that formed the word and jot the number next to each word. At the end of the week, turn it into a math activity by having students count the TOTAL number of points on each page to see who is the reigning word work scrabble champion!
You can create other fun weekly challenges like:
* Who can create the longest word?
* Who can create the word with the most numerical value?
* Who can create the most compound words?
This type of activity provides the teacher with valuable information about how students process words. For example:
*use of silent "e"
My students absolutely LOVE this activity... especially those kiddos who are kinesthetic and work well with their hands!
I introduce a new word work puzzle each week. This set includes 4 different puzzles (copied 2-to-a-page).
Enjoy - and thanks for stopping by my store!!!!
