These are my lesson plans for Sorts 31-34 of Level B in Words Their Way. I typically do one sort per week. There are five lessons per sort, one for each day of the week. Each day is a new activity to model for the sort: On Monday I introduce the sort, on Tuesday we find the words in the poem in the big book, on Wednesday we take a close look at the words by comparing several words in the sort, on Thursday I show them a completed sort with several mistakes and have the students pick out my mistakes, and on Friday I explain how to complete the writing page. Each day, a different group of students are doing a different activity and these activities are rotated throughout groups, throughout the week (as noted in my differentiation component of the lesson).
These lessons are written in workshop format so they are meant to be a short mini-lesson to model it and a higher order question as a “turn and talk” before they go back to their seats and work. The lesson plan is written to touch upon many components of the Danielson Framework. All the lesson plans include the following: unit, lesson topic, objective (written as “Today I will ___ so that I can ___. I’ll know that I’ve got it when ___.”), standard, vocabulary, materials, prerequisite skills, motivation, learning plan, higher order thinking question, assessments, differentiation, closure, and reinforce and extend learning.
In my classroom we are actually using the level C books and so I am doing these level B lessons with my students that are below level right now.
