Students carry out a co-operative learning 'jigsaw' task. Jigsaw is specifically used for students as a comprehension literacy intervention.
Students work through a 90-minute jigsaw literacy activity focused on SYMBIOTIC RELATIONSHIPS. The jigsaw model is a HIGHLY ENGAGING and effective LITERACY strategy which breaks down complex tasks into smaller more manageable components in a CO-OPERATIVE LEARNING environment. This strategy encourages students to take responsibility for learning one component of a topic in great depth before presenting their findings to their peers.
When implemented correctly the jigsaw strategy can be an extremely efficient method of learning new content and developing effective literacy skills. It is particularly well-suited to science, which often has dense and varied topics containing specific language and terminology that students may not be familiar or confident with. The nature of the jigsaw model encourages participation and cooperative learning while enabling learners to interact with the content in a group setting that facilitates interaction and teamwork among students. Literacy skills are also developed as students are required to master both the oral and written use of scientific language and terminology whilst finding and interpreting information from a range of sources and communicating this understanding to their peers.
In this activity, students are guided to answer questions related to the sources given which compare and contrast as well as analyse how each relationship will affect the long-term abundance and distribution of species.
Instructions for students:
To start off, get yourselves into groups of 4, remember who your group is.
Each member of the group will be given a number from 1 to 4. This number will be your study group number.
Break into your study groups, and using the information given in the handouts, you will become the experts on your symbiotic relationship.
Answer the questions for your section and learn the information provided. You will now be the teacher!
Now return to your original group of 4. Each member of the group will take turns at teaching the other students in their group about the symbiotic relationship they studied and help the other students answer the questions.
