This file starts with teacher suggestions for class discussions about the meaning and purpose of a country's capital city. This is reinforced on the accompanying worksheet along with explanations of the notations used on maps that indicate a city is a capital.
It continues with students using an atlas (or the internet) to locate the names of the capital cities of the most populous countries on earth. A letter-count puzzle reinforces the spelling of the country names.
An additional worksheet uses the December solstice as a segue to locating more capital cities and the teacher directions give ideas for showing the relationship that hemispheres have with a capital city's seasons.
A poster activity allows students to research a capital city and create a poster about it. A detailed student handout with instructions and requirements is attached.
A final group activity has students reviewing their own locale - city, state, capital, continent, etc. and extending their knowledge to capital cities of other countries.
A very simple final quiz is here which includes an assessment of students' knowledge of their own locale and country/capital as well as that of at least one other country.
I have added puzzle pages for early finishers.
Answers included except for the group assignment for which answers would vary.
