‘WOW Words’ is a way to reward students’ use of a wider range of vocabulary. I encourage my students to utilise our synonym word wall, thesauruses and collect words from the books they read. Building students’ vocabulary from a young age is crucial to enhance their oral communication, written work and comprehension.
Each time a student uses a ‘Wow Word’ in their writing or speaking they are able to colour in a star. Once all 100 stars are coloured in, the class is rewarded.
How I embed this into my everyday teaching practice:
• When calling the roll, instead of students replying ‘here’, have students reply with:
an adjective to describe _________
a noun group for _________
describe the weather in two words
• Model how to discover and use new vocabulary. When reading a text find a new word, look up the definition, put it on the classroom word wall and have students use it and be rewarded for using it.
