Teacher Role During Conference

Each student needs to meet in conference with you no less than once a week. Depending on the size of your class, the conferences will be no longer than 5-7 minutes each. Even if it appears, the student is not ready for a conference; this is the student who needs a conference more than another does. Ongoing writing projects may require 5-7 weeks to complete and may be rewritten several times on the way to publication. Changing the paradigm that a piece can be completed and taken through the writing process in a few days will take time, but the pieces published will be better. Conferences are not editing meetings. Teachers do not revise for students. Teachers listen and ask questions. Teachers make suggestions. A Writers' Workshop piece should have been discussed in teacher conference several times before publication.
