Do you need something engaging for your students to participate in before or after you've discussed the four MAIN causes of The Great War? Look no further! My students love this activity. I have done it successfully in both 6th grade and now 11th grade, with some tweaking in both grades, of course. In this digital download, you will find four documents each containing at least 2 political cartoons and/or pieces of propaganda. Students will be able to work independently or in a group setting to analyze the political cartoons and cite evidence to justify which main cause of the war the cartoon is illustrating. The political cartoon analysis sheet is included in the download. Students will answer two questions per document set. Students will be expected to analyze the documents, describe them, and then use their analysis to cite evidence (at least two pieces per document) to justify their reasoning. I typically use this activity after I have introduced the four main causes of WWI and completed our graphic organizer. I believe it serves as a great informal assessment to the four main causes of WWI.
I have both the power point and graphic organizer for the causes of WWI available in a separate digital file.
