This unit works beautifully when language arts and social studies can be taught in tandem. The unit allows students to engage both in groups and independently as they explore WWI and focus on assigned countries to engage in a nationalism simulation.
This compressed zip file includes everything you need to run a successful unit that explores particular countries of importance with lists for novels to read and important individuals to conduct research papers on. The countries included are as follows: Russia, United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, France, Ottoman Empire, Austria-Hungary, and United States. Additionally, there are a variety of independent choices for students as they work to create a nationalistic approach to their research through the lens of a particular country that they will 'become' for a Nationalism Summit.
Students choose book selections, an individual to research, learn about a variety of important facets for a particular country, and explore ways to creatively showcase their findings, including the usage of propaganda.
This unit also works in tandem with the Epic History YouTube series for WWI and includes questions for students to respond to as they make their way through each year of the war.
This works great if you want to involve your entire middle/high school where students can vote for the country that is the most persuasive during presentations! It helps hold students accountable and adds an extra, competitive piece that students tend to enjoy!
