I use this activity as an alternative to testing my students on a novel that we did whole-class or novels that they chose during Literature Circles. This specific summative assessment is typically used during my Holocaust unit and wraps the unit up. This project takes roughly 1.5 to 2 weeks to complete from start to finish, depending on the class I have.
The timeline I use is as follows:
Day 1: Explain project and discuss the rubric that will be used.
Days 2-4: Students use the planning pages to get their scrapbooks organized and all information in one place. During these days, students are required to have their books to use as reference.
Days 5-end: Students use the planning pages to create their scrapbook pages. They must balance time on the internet to search for images and the book to search for content to support the items in the scrapbook.
The last day can be used to share the scrapbooks of the class. Some years, I have used PowerPoint and other years I have given students the opportunity to create an actual scrapbook. Some students like the technology and others like the actual artistic elements of an actual scrapbook.
I hope your students enjoy this project as much as my students have enjoyed doing it.
