During the 1800’s many Americans left the east and headed for the open land areas of the west. By the end of the Gold Rush alone, 300,000 people had migrated just to California. Many hundreds of thousands more moved west in search of land, economic opportunity, or just a second chance at the American dream.
This game helps students to learn about some of the reasons why people headed west as well as the trails and tribulations they faced during their journey. Students must use their knowledge of westward movement to guide their wagon trains across the country along historic routes like the Santa Fe Trail and the Oregon Trail. They must strategize about what routes to take in order to avoid hazards, delays, or traffic jams on their journey west. The player who helps the most wagon trains west and gains the most points is the winner!
It is a great way to introduce students to Manifest Destiny or Westward Expansion and a fantastic way to test your student’s knowledge of history content. I’ve used this game for many years both as a fun activity and as a formative assessment tool, and it is always a hit with my students.
