In this activity, students will use their knowledge of robber barons and captains of industry to decide if Wal-Mart would be considered a robber baron or captain of industry. One reading supports the idea that Wal-Mart helps workers and gives them employment (reading 1), while the other contends that Wal-Mart damages its workers.
This fun and intriguing activity has students relate their current learning of late-19th/early 20th century industrialists and has them decide if a current controversial company is one or the other.
**Pages 1 and 2 are the readings. Page 3 is a half sheet to use as a formative assessment. Each reading has 4 questions to be answered based on what they've read. Finally, students are asked to decide if they believe Wal-Mart is a robber baron or captain of industry.
