This assignment is an awesome way to help students break down some of the more complicated quotes in Walden in retell them in modern language.
This handout features a chart that consists of three columns: the quote from Walden, the meaning of the quote in modern language, and Transcendental beliefs projected in the quote.
The first column is completed already. Students must examine the quotes and then complete the second and third columns. The first row has been entirely completed to provide students with a model for completing the remainder of the handout.
After having students complete the assignment individually, I would suggest arranging students in small groups. Once in groups, students should collaborate to decide on the best answer for each quote and then compete with the other groups using white boards.
