In this activity, students will analyze characters or groups of characters from a text. I used this with nonfiction texts to get the students more engaged; however, it could apply to any text. Students first discuss the expression "walk a mile in their shoes." Then, they see a slide of various types of shoes and discuss what type of person would wear each shoe and why. Finally, they think of what type of shoe would best symbolize their character(s). The instructions are laid out clearly and call for them to consider all aspects of their character(s)--physical, mental, emotional, etc. They also should make text connections to their chosen shoe design. I have had very unique products created with this assignment. It allows for much creativity, but also forces students to analyze deeply.
