"Walk the Plank" is a great open-ended puzzle activity to use any time but especially after completing a storybook lesson with any pirate book such as "How I became a Pirate" by Melinda Long and David Shannon.

After printing all pages and laminating, cut out the puzzle pieces and shuffle. Using your own skills cards, students give responses as you direct before receiving 1 puzzle card. If they receive a puzzle piece they already have, it is discarded (my students always say "too bad, so sad" when this happens). If they receive a puzzle piece with "Walk the Plank" on it, they must give one puzzle piece back. The first student to complete their puzzle is the winner - although I always help all of my students complete the puzzle at the end. Younger students may need a copy of the whole picture to complete their puzzle.
