Walking Rainforest Trails - Virtual Field Trip Distance Learning PDF

Each grade-unique EdTechLens Trip Journal contains 33 entries. The high-interest rainforest theme is used to present NGSS-aligned life science content including plant and animal life, ecosystems, human impact on the rainforest, and adaptations for survival. All concepts are covered within the context of an actual trip to the rainforest. Rainforest Journey Trip Journals present a rare opportunity to use primary sources with younger students in science class.

This trip journal may be completed independently by students or with teacher/parent guidance. Guidance documents are included.

The media-rich primary source journal document with its real-life connections is supplemented with an end-of-lesson activity, discussion questions, a standards-alignment document, and a reference document on using primary sources. EdTechLens Trip Journal primary source documents can be used for science as well as ELA and have been written specifically for elementary-aged students.

-- The trip journal document contains 33 entries made over a period

of four days; each entry has 2-4 pieces of media and text (76 pages)

-- An end-of-lesson activity (3 pages)

-- An end-of-lesson activity answer key (2 pages)

-- A teacher guide with suggested discussion questions (1-3 questions per

             entry) (5 pages)

-- A listing of NGSS and CC ELA standards addressed (4 pages)

-- A reference document that includes a suggested format for using the included documents, how to define primary sources for students, benefits of using these kinds of documents with young learners, and links to further resources. (3 pages)

-- Total number of pages in this package: 93

There are 4 days of journal entries, each with 8 - 9 entries per day. If all suggestions given were used, completing the Trip Journal would take approximately 12 sessions. The length of each session would vary depending on age-appropriateness of the grade level and teacher preference for the length of class discussion.

Walking Rainforest Trails was written for 1st grade students but is also appropriate for students in grades K and 2.

The format allows for teacher-led lessons on a digital display as well as small group or individual use on computers. Students can use independently on iPads or computers for enrichment, reinforcement, or at science centers. Real-life connections and media-rich content make it useful for engaging challenged learners.

This primary source document was written by Ellen Senisi of the Ellen at the EdTechLens Store on Teachers Pay Teachers. All photos and video clips were taken by Ellen Senisi and Steven Senisi within the Tambopata Park Reserve in Peru. This region is located within Amazonian Rainforest Basin and is considered one of the top biodiversity hotspots in the world.
