Here is a powerpoint giving instruction how to conduct a walking tour as an Anticipatory Set for any classroom. This is a great way to expose your students to a units content. I like to do this at the beginning of a unit or section of study. I typically pick 5-10 documents in forms of images of peoples, place, events, items, etc. etc. & written documents such as speeches, letters, newspaper articles, etc. etc.
For my World War I unit I actually took written documents and used the Wordle program to scramble the words. I then had my students walk around the room with the actual written documents and tried to match which wordle matched each written document. Some of the documents I used was the Treaty of Versaille, 14 points, Zimmerman Note, etc. etc.
I also have my students catergorize the items on the walking tour using an ESP graphic organizer. This organizer can be created by your students in their notebooks. Section off three parts of a piece of paper and label on column Economic, Social, and Political. I have students tell me why the item goes in each category.
