Walls… they’re everywhere we look, but have you really thought about them? What holds a wall
together? What makes a wall stand without falling? How is a wall created?
In our STEM unit, “WALLS: What Goes Up, MIGHT Come Down!” we will explore Materials Engineering — if you want to build something, the right materials matter! In this design challenge, students explore the properties of the earth materials, clay, sand, and soil, as they’re used in mortar mixtures. They will then use the knowledge they have gained through research and classroom learning to produce the “just right” combination of earth materials to create a mortar mixture that will be used to build a sustainable wall.
