One of the beginning understandings of an elementary economic unit is for the students to develop an understanding of a want and a need. Included in this packet are a variety of activities to help young students understand the differences between a want and a need. Initially you'll find two cards that define want and need. You'll then find various pictures that the students will sort into those two categories - wants or needs. I have intentionally thrown in a couple of cards that at first glance seem like something they need, specifically toilet paper and a refrigerator. These two pictures should open up a discussion and help the students understand that for something to truly be a need it has to be something that helps them to survive.
After the students understand the difference between a want and a need they can then sort the need picture cards into four new categories - food, clothing, shelter and love.
After the above sorting activities have been completed, they can then demonstrate learning with a simple cut and paste page, a sorting activity and a spinner game.
Included in this set:
*anchor charts for want and need
*header cards - needs, wants, food, clothing, shelter, love
*54 pocket chart sorting cards
*student sorting cut and paste page
*student sheet for graphing
