This economic unit, Wants and Needs, is geared towards the Primary Classroom, grades 1 - 3. It is packed with everything you need to learn the basics of wants, needs, saving, and earning. There are over 150 pages in this huge unit! I promise you'll be very happy with everything you'll receive!
Your students will be guided through their learning from two characters, Wendy Wants-a-Lot and Ned Needs-a-Little! Both Wendy and Ned explain to your students what wants and needs are and how they can be helpful and harmful. Wendy Wants-a-Lot asks your students for help to learn how to save more like her friend Ned Needs-a-Little. Ned has a specific strategy that he uses to save his earned money that he'll teach your students to use themselves. Your students will just love learning from Wendy and Ned with all the components included in this unit.
More specifically, the following components are included in this economic unit:
~Literature Connections: Books that you can use for teaching wants and needs
~Vocabulary Posters and Printables: There are posters for the following economic terms: wants, needs, save, earn, and spend. The posters have a definition and illustrations. There are also word wall cards of each term. I've provided you with a student vocabulary journal and interactive notebook printables for the students to keep track of the terms they learn throughout the unit.
~Informational Readers: There are two informational readers, one about Wendy Wants-a-Lot and one about Ned Needs-a-Little. Each character has a full-page poster you can display, to help your students the difference between someone who wants too much and someone that needs just enough.
~Class Books: There are two class books with full-page, color covers and printables your students can complete.
~Advice Letter: This printable asks your students to write a letter to Wendy Wants-a-Lot, giving her advice on how to save her money instead of spending it all the time on her wants. This is a good way to get a quick assessment of how your students are grasping the wants and needs concepts.
~Money Jars Craftivity: Ned shares with the students how he saves his money for wants and needs using money jars. This craftivity has the students make their own money jars, using their own wants and needs as examples.
~Community Worker Easy Reader: This reader highlights community workers and hits home the concept of earning money for a living, to have money to save for students wants. It shares why we need to work to get what we want. The terms earn and spend are highlighted throughout.
~Wants and Needs Printables: This section includes a variety of printables about wants and needs. The printables are interactive, and have the students color, cut, sort and glue. They also will write responses. These are perfect for homework, whole class instruction, and small group work.
~Wants and Needs Sorting Center: Students will sort item cards into a want and need category. There is a recording sheet included.
~Wants and Needs Walk the Room Activity: This center activity uses real photographs of items that the students will love! They will walk the room, finding the cards, and decide if the items are a want or need. A recording sheet is included.
~Wants and Needs Board Game: This can be used as another center activity, or in small groups. The board game asks the students to use real photos of items and determine if they are wants or needs.
~Oh, Wants and Needs: This is a song, sung to the tune of "Oh, Christmas Tree". There is a lyric sheet included, with pocket chard cards of the lyrics so students can read along while singing the cutest tune ever about wants and needs!
~Community Workers Sorting Center: Using real photographs again, students will match photos of community workers, definitions of their duties, and titles of jobs. A recording sheet is included, along with a couple more printables about community workers and earning money for wants.
~Pigeon Wants a Puppy! Literature Connection Lesson: Using the book Pigeon Wants a Puppy, by Mo Willems, students will explore and show what they have learned about wants and needs. A lesson plan is included, along with story element printables to use with the book.
~Pigeon Craftivity: This craftivity is a cute pigeon, with a writing activity students will complete. This will be very cute as a bulletin board display!
2 Power Point Presentations: I've created for you two presentations that are to be used as assessment quizzes at the end of the unit. One deals with wants and needs; the other is about earning, spending, and community workers. All you need to do is play the presentations and students answer the quiz questions on a sheet of paper. There are 10 questions on each quiz.
There are so many goodies in this unit that I'm sure you'll be very happy with your students' learning of the wants and needs concepts. Please see the preview for a look at everything included!
