The document includes approximately three vocabulary words for each of the novel's 21 chapters and is presented as a graphic organizer. Students are required to make vocabulary predictions, record definitions, consider the word as it is used in the context of the story, and demonstrate their understanding. After every three chapters, a writing prompt is provided for additional practice.
As a bonus, a sample reading calendar is provided as well as a handout explaining annotations with a list of annotation "starters." Having students use these starters on post-its while reading will encourage higher-level thinking and better interactions with the text.
