This is a lesson that will correlate with your study on Native Americans during the westward expansion period. I have created a note catcher that students can use to take notes about the various battles that were fought between the Native Americans and the American Settlers. I have included a compare and contrast chart that students may use to write the various opinions of each group. Finally, I have included a passage that is a quote from Crazy Horse about his opinion on the treatment of the Lakota. Students will then be asked to analyze their notes and compare and contrast chart to write an opinion piece from the point of view of either the American Indians or the American Settlers.
This is an excellent activity to put your students in the shoes of the Native Americans or Settlers and examine their actions and treatment of the other group. This is also a great way to integrate writing into your social studies lessons.
This could also be placed in a literacy center for students to research and then progress to writing their essays. Students could be paired to complete this activity, one student could represent the Native Americans and the other student could write from the opinion of the American Settlers.
