Ancient Sumer was arguably the world's first real civilization. Allow students to use these station cards to find information about Sumer in order to determine whether Sumer was a civilization or not. Begin the activity by looking at the definition of "characteristic," as there are seven distinct characteristics that make up a civilization. Place the seven station cards around the room and allow students to visit each station, OR place students in groups and rotate the cards around them. Students should fill out worksheets as they complete each of the seven characteristics of civilization. The worksheet may also be used as individual work with Chapter 5 of the TCI textbook History Alive! The Ancient World.
