Product Description
The purpose of this lesson plan is to introduce the reading of primary sources in U.S. History. The exercise then culminates in a writing sample by students based on what they learned from the primary source, Washington’s Farewell Address. The lesson is meant for any level of high school student and the duration of the lesson is one full block or two 45 minute blocks. Included in the lesson are instructions, questions, a writing sample as an assessment, and an excerpt of Washington's Farewell Address. The excerpt focuses on foreign affairs. The writing sample is purposefully set up as differentiation. There are two options, one for low level drawing on the questions presented. The other is higher level, asking students to read another portion of Washington's Farewell Address and write on it. An answer key is not included as many of the questions are open ended and left to interpretation and perspective. The lesson is provided in a pdf format.
