Thanks for your interest in the Wasted Time Lab! This file is a Microsoft Word Document, so you can edit it as you need to so it can fit what you want to teach.
With this lab, students will make observations as everyday materials decompose.
*I’ve used this lab at the beginning of the year to introduce the scientific method, and then referred to it as the school year continued with various units.
Scientific method – Teach students the steps of an experiment using the scientific method. As you set up the experiment, have students list the problem/question we are trying to answer, have them make a hypothesis, set up the experiment and write out the procedure, As the school year goes on, they can make observations and analyze their findings. As the school year ends, they can draw a conclusion.
Producers, consumers and decomposers: Students can observe materials decomposing.
Photosynthesis: Discuss the life cycle of plants and how photosynthesis works for the plants
Water Cycle: Place plastic wrap over one side of your tank. Then observe condensation, and as a class you can talk about precipitation, and evaporation, and run off.
Chemical and Physical Changes: Refer to this experiment and ask students what kind of changes are happening.
Earth Day: How long has the aluminum can have been there with no changes? What does this say about the liter on the side of the road or in the dump?
