This selection of science based language arts activities is based on the story “The SNOWFLAKE – A Water Cycle Story” written by Neil Waldman. It’s a fun way to improve listening and comprehension skills while reinforcing or introducing the water cycle and states of matter. The unit includes the following activities:
Student Notes Form – Allows students to take notes while you read the story aloud.
Sequence Activity – Students put the events of the story in the proper order.
Vocabulary Crossword – Contains words from the story and water cycle vocabulary.
Color Wheel Activity – Reinforces the meaning of the words evaporation, condensation, transportation, melting, and freezing by citing examples from the story.
Vocabulary Wordsearch – Features words used in the story.
Color Map Activity – A fun logic activity that gets students thinking. It’s harder than it looks.
My primary use of this unit is to build listening comprehension skills while reinforcing science knowledge about the water cycle and changes in matter. I encourage my students to take notes while I read the story aloud. They use their notes to help them complete the sequence activity. Sometimes I have them work with a partner to further discuss the story, and make deeper connections regarding the events and concepts.
Read-aloud picture books are a fun way to teach content material. I suggest using the activities in the order listed above. Answer keys are provided for each activity.
