Water Cycle World - States of Matter Science Reader's Theater
This whimsical water cycle reader’s theater teaches students about the changes in states of matter in a fun way. It can be used to introduce a unit, or reinforce concepts about matter. The reader’s theater/play format allows many students to participate, and it reinforces reading and speaking skills as they learn about the water cycle.
The story takes place at a theme park called Water Cycle World (fictional name). The main characters in the play are three drops of water named Surge, Hydro, and Flow. The three water droplets learn about freezing, melting, boiling, evaporation, and condensation in the water cycle as they make their way through Water Cycle World.
I tried to add humor throughout the story, so I hope your students laugh as they learn about the water cycle and states of matter. You could read the play in one sitting, or divide it up into sections, having the students make predictions and a discuss the water cycle parts embedded in each scene.
I have included a water cycle wordsearch activity for your students to do after they have completed the play. It contains the key science terms, plus the names of the main characters.

Comments by teachers who have purchased this reader's theater:
"I was writing my own Readers' Theater for States of Matter and ran out of time. I somehow found this one, and bought it. I printed it, and 5 minutes later was ready to go. The lesson took my students about 40 minutes, and they LOVED it. Not only that, but they could all tell me SO many things about changing states of matter afterward. The story is humorous and educational. Win-win!"
"My students enjoyed doing this play several times and were disappointed when it was time to move on. It encouraged them to know their terms."
"My third graders couldn't stop giggling! They enjoyed it and wanted to read it again!"
"I had originally planned to use this in one of my lesson plans, but i was sick that day. The sub decided to try it any way. She said the kids had a great time with it. Engaging and subs can use it? Awesomeness!"
