This Earth Science environmental project requires students to create a water filter for use with grey water to conserve water resources. This water filtration lab is a perfect Earth Day STEM. The challenge incorporates the engineering cycle. It helps students investigate, plan, create, improve, and evaluate their filter. Students use observations and collected data to write a report on their findings Leveled texts and writing prompts round out this jammed packed set!
(Currently: 13 NGSS aligned Projects)
❤ All STEM Projects are OPEN ENDED, allowing student flexibility to create and test unique designs. ❤
Student Directions Page:
The presented scenario sets students up to create their greywater filter.
Teacher Greywater Creation Solution:
Recommendations are included on how to create a greywater solution.
Data Collection Page:
After students have designed and built the filter, they will test and record the results for trial 1. Trial 2 is designed for students to complete the test again after modifications have been made during the engineering design process.
Engineering Design Cycle Reflection:
Students will reflect about what they did as they worked through each part of the engineering design cycle.
Water Filter Report:
Students will complete a one-page report detailing their findings and conclusion.
The grading rubric allows teachers to assess how students used and applied their knowledge of water filtration to explain how their filter was created and helps cleanse greywater for reuse.
Leveled Passage: Greywater- How can Water Conservation help the Environment 3 Leveled Texts
Students will read a leveled passage about greywater, its collection, and various applications.
Science Leveled Passage: The Great Pacific Garbage Patch- A Global Problem 3 Leveled Texts
Students will read a leveled passage about the garbage patch in the Pacific Ocean.
2 Venn Diagrams:
Students will use understanding of their water filter to complete the Venn Diagrams.
6 Writing Prompts: Persuade, Inform, Entertain:
Students draw on knowledge of author's purpose and from information gained during the STEAM project. There are six prompts, two for each author's purpose.
