This document is meant to give students background knowledge of common water tests that are used to determine stream quality including macroinvertebrate samples, phosphates, nitrates, pH, dissolved oxygen, temperature, turbidity and flow rate. Students should use this sheet to take notes and then conduct their own water quality tests and record the data. I usually have students take this paper out to the stream with them on a clipboard. I also have a Comparing Water Quality activity that I use to transfer, share, and analyze the data after we have completed two days of testing. Each group runs two tests each day, we share our data and then analyze the quality of our stream. This activity is completed after students have studied and practiced identifying about 25 common macroinvertebrates.
