Introduce students to Nixon's presidency with his policies toward Vietnam, the Soviet Union, and China. Students also read about Nixon's paranoia that he would lose the election of 1972 and an introduction to the watergate break in. Students examine a series of documents that explore the Watergate scandal including two political cartoons, a Times article with a poll on public opinion of Nixon, an excerpt from the Washington Post, and an excerpt from Nixon's resignation speech. Students also watch a 3 minute clip from the movie Frost Nixon where Nixon admits that he believed the president was above the law. Students use this information to discuss the essential question: Was resignation a harsh enough punishment or should criminal action have been taken against Nixon?
