This adorable set of watermelon work mats and ants are perfect for practicing addition and subtraction facts! What do ants love more than a good picnic? They love counting, of course! These ants need to count all the watermelon seeds before they can have a watermelon snack!
Included are 8 watermelon work mats, 2 sets of numbered ants 0-10 (1 with green numbers and 1 with red numbers), "buttons," 3 recording sheets, and seed sums 0-20.
So many ways to play!
1) Children use the ants to tell their own number story and make an addition or subtraction sentence. Then either use the provided buttons or real buttons (to represent watermelon seeds) to make the sum on the work mat. Children can then find the correct sum card.
2) Give children a sum card and ask them to find all the ways the ants can make that sum.
3) Show children the sum and one ant and ask them to find the missing ant to complete the number bonds.
4) Place buttons on the work mat and ask children to find the ants to make the addition sentence.
5) Make up your own game!
Students can complete a recording sheet (3 to choose from; same format for each but different focus: 1 addition, 1 subtraction, 1 both) after doing this math center.
My students love to make up addition and subtraction word problems. We had so much fun with this math center and I hope your students will too!
