Watermelon! is a fun way for students to practice reading sight words!
The following sight words are included: a, all, am, and, are, at, big, but, by, can, did, do, get, go, got, had, has, have, he, here, him, his, how, I, if, in, is, it, like, little, look, make, may, me, my, no, not, of, on, play, said, saw, see, she, the, then, this, to, up, us, we, went, what, when, where, who, why, with, yes, you
I also included number words: one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten
I also included color words: red, white, blue, black, brown, yellow, green, gray, orange, yellow, pink, purple
I included days of the week and months of the year as well.
Print cards on cardstock and laminate for durability. Cut the cards out and either place in a container to have students reach in to pick a card or have the students put the cards in a pile face down in the middle.
Students will take turns and pick a card. Each card has a sight word that the student has to read. If the student can read the sight word, s/he gets to keep it. If s/he cannot read the sight word, s/he has to put the card back. If the student draws or picks the “Watermelon!” card, they shout (or whisper!) "Watermelon!" and that student only has to put all of his/her cards back. The student with the most cards at the end wins!
I hope you and your students have fun playing this game!
