If your district uses Lucy Caulkins or if you teach Narrative Writing, this is for you! Use this sheet to have students map out their writing process. Use the Whole picture oval as the watermelon, choosing a topic. The "pieces" break down that whole picture and give students an opportunity to think about activities they did during the "watermelon" idea. The seeds are the small moments, where we want our students to end up in their writing.
I modeled with mine first and then had students fill their sheet out and discuss with me why they felt each idea fit into the categories on the paper. This could be kept for more writing ideas as well.
