While reading Ch. 7 (when Byron gets a conk), I had my students read an excerpt from Malcolm X's autobiography titled "My First Conk". This story was in our textbooks, but you can easily find a full-text version online. We read the story together and talked about Malcolm X's main points. This assignment asked the students to write a short paragraph in which they analyze Byron's motivations behind getting a conk using Malcolm X's opinions as a launching point. Since most of my students had no idea what a "conk" was or why one would get one, this activity really helped them understand the chapter and why Mr. and Mrs. Watson get so upset with Byron.
