This inquiry lab activity consists of 7 stations that students will rotate through in one class period. It works great as an intro activity before teaching a unit on waves to engage students and to show them that waves have energy, which can then be transferred through different media. During this inquiry activity, students will create longitudinal and transverse waves, see how tuning forks transfer energy to different objects, make connections between waves and light (through refraction), and make inferences in trying to understand how a string telephone works.
OMG Waves!!! is an editable document consisting of teacher instructions, a lab worksheet for students, and procedure signs for each lab station, which can be printed and laminated for repeated use.
Materials needed include:
1 ping pong ball
2 cans or cups
Tuning forks of at least 2 different frequencies (you will need at least 2 frequencies for one station and only one for another, so the minimum number needed is 3.
