An extension to this could be a task where you ask students the following: You have 10 cats and dogs. How many of each can you have? This will assist in students being fluent in their facts to 10 and gives them understanding to the commutative property where they learn that 4 cats and 6 dogs is the same as (but different than) 6 cats and 4 dogs.
