This lesson is a series of journal topics that relate to the novel We Beat the Street, by doctors Sampson Davis, Rameck Hunt, and George Jenkins, with Sharon Draper. There is one journal topic from each chapter of the book, including the introduction and conclusion. The journals relate to the book and have students make a personal connection with the book and relate it to their own lives. I teach this book with my 9th grade A.V.I.D. class. This is a motivational true story that can be taught in a variety of English/Reading classes, as well as support classes such as A.V.I.D. Students are to answer each journal topic with a paragraph reflection. These journals may be completed in class or for homework, and should take 10- 20 minutes to complete each topic. There are a total of 24 topics.
