PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

After reading the novel We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson, students choose one of three topics to write an argument. Throughout the unit, students read supplementary works, fiction and nonfiction, which can be utilized for this assignment. Additional research can be done by the students, but that can be determined based on your students' skills and your objectives. Students must incorporate various aspects of the curriculum such as vocabulary terms and style that have been covered prior to this assignment. These aspects of the paper can be modified to meet your students' needs. The task can also be aligned to the NYS Common Core Part 2 Argument.

This culminating activity is easily completed with the unit also provided on this site. Students are asked to annotate a specific topic each chapter that leads them to the three choices in this assignment. For this task, students demonstrate an understanding of the novel and the topics discussed throughout the unit by creating and supporting claim with sources other than the novel.
