HOW TO USE WE MARCH BOOK STUDY:
Author/Illustrator information sheet: short biographical information to share with students
Discussion Questions: There are two separate sheets of discussion questions: about the Civil Rights Movement, and about racial inequality today. The purpose of the first set of discussion questions is to help students understand what was happening to drive people to march and protest. The purpose of the second set of discussion questions is to help students understand why people are marching and protesting now.
Protest Sign Analysis: Students will analyze signs (that are shown in the book) and explain what people were marching to gain. This activity is done in 3 levels that include: fill in the blank, finish the sentence, and write your own explanation.
Journal: Students will respond to the journal prompt with writing and illustration. (more writing is required as the level gets higher)
Martin Luther King Jr. Reading Fluency: Students will read the grade level biography to the teacher. The teacher will record any mistakes made in 1 minute, and count the total words read correctly in one minute. Students will practice reading the biography daily. On Friday, the teacher will re-time all the students, and get the new count.
*I have used this method of reading practice in the classroom and in tutoring for over 5 years. It has increased the reading level of many students by 2 grade levels within a single year.
