When given a set of rocks (of a variety of sizes), students will measure the width of each rock to the nearest quarter inch and record their data in a table. Once their data is collected, they will represent their data on a line plot and write 3 questions about their set of data to be answered by another student. For example, "How many rocks measured 1 inch or less?" (etc.)
At the end of the lesson, we made "pet rocks" using one of the larger rocks in each of the students sets. (They glued on googly eyes). Our pet rocks are a reminder that we ROCK at line plots!
**The dollar store has bags of rocks or you could collect them outside with your class and have them measure the rocks they found!**
