This product is a 6 page pdf file. The first two pages contain a brief biography on the African American poet, Gwendolyn Brooks with a follow-up short response question. The second page is the poem with some interpretive questions. This lesson would probably take about a half an hour.
Then, pages 3-6 is the same lesson, but differentiated and chunked. This would make the lesson four mini lessons (about 10 minutes each). They could be used as a bell-ringer activity or as differentiation for special education students.
This lesson could be used in a poetry unit, in Black History Month, or as a companion with the novel, "The Outsiders". My middle school students always enjoy this poem, but it could be used with high school students as well.
I hope you find this product helpful.
