Product Description

This project is the perfect end-of-the-year reflection and community-building activity for your class. It connects the individual with the group using tessellations and it has a ton of “wow factor” when complete. It’s fun for kids and easy for you as the teacher, and it has a lot of options. I’ve done everything I can to make this a successful project - I’ve even included a teaching video!

My hope is that you will get to reflect with your students about their school year using this activity. I hope your students will be inspired by the message that they are important as individuals and important as a community.

Quick Overview: Students will each work individually on a tessellation piece designed to look like a saguaro cactus. They will personalize their piece by reflecting (writing) about their school year and how, as a class, they “stuck” together. Once the pieces are finished and put together, they will make a stunning bulletin board or door display for your class.

We stick together!

The message is clear. Each student is an individual, but when they “stick together” (support each other) they can accomplish great things!

OTHER TESSELLATION COLLABORATION PROJECTS:

How it works...

• Students will each work individually on an tessellation piece in the shape of a saguaro cactus.

• They will personalize their piece by reflecting on their school year and answering writing prompts - the main idea being how they "stuck" together with their classmates over the school year.

• Once their piece is finished, they will cut it out.

• The final pieces will then be assembled into a tessellation mural/poster/bulletin board display with their peers.

Included in this resource:

• Teaching video

• Instructions

• Tessellation pieces (2 sets + blank)

• Banner “WE STICK TOGETHER”

Teaching Video:

Before you start this project, you could show my tessellation teaching video to your students. In this video, I give your students a basic introduction to tessellation (so you don’t have to). I also explain to your students how this project works. Then you take it from there!

Instructions:

I have provided all of the steps for this project as written instructions with detailed photographs.

Tessellation Pieces:

There are 2 sets included plus two blank designs. Each set has four designs. This project is great for any age - simply use the set that fits your students best!

  • Set #1: The first set is a traditional cactus design with space for students to reflect on their school year by writing on the lines of the cactus—this is great for older students. I have provided four writing prompts and have assigned four colors (green, blue, yellow, and purple) to this set. If you’d like all your students to create green cacti, you can give them only the first design/writing prompt.

  • Set #2: The second set uses geometric shapes as patterns inside of the tessellation design. This set is great for younger students who might struggle too much with writing reflective sentences. Instead, have students reflect on their year and write words or short phrases in the spaces to describe how their class “stuck together” through the year. Students might write things like, “kindness,” “friendship,” and “cooperation" in the geometric spaces. This design also allows for endless creativity as the students can color the pieces however they want—let them be as imaginative as they want!

  • Blank Designs: I have also included two “blank” designs without any writing prompts or colors assigned so you can completely customize this project to fit your needs.

“WE STICK TOGETHER” Banner:

I have included a “WE STICK TOGETHER” 5-page banner to display along with your final tessellation mural. I have included 2 options...

  • Banner option #1: I have included a copy of this banner that has the colors yellow, blue, green, and purple assigned—as shown above.

  • Poster option #2: I have also included a copy of the banner with no colors assigned so your students can color it however you/they want.

I hope you and your students enjoy this activity and the memories that it will evoke and strengthen.

Thank you for making art with your students!
