Here is a cute way to track your students' progress and motivate your them to master their addition and subtraction facts to 20. Place the "We are "Fin"tastic at Solving Math Facts!" poster near your calendar or another prominent spot in your classroom for students to view their progress. Then, place the fish tank and bowls in descending order below the poster. (See picture in preview) Write the name of each student on a fish and place them in the last fish tank that is blank.
Choose a number for students to begin practicing based on the the needs of your class. (Example: + 0 addition facts). Have students practice adding numbers + 0 with sums to 20 in your guided math groups and math stations using the flashcards provided. Then, assess students for mastery by giving them the + 0 math test. If students miss 1 or less on their math test, they will move their fish to the 0 fish bowl. This means that they have mastered their + 0 facts and are now ready to learn their + 1 facts and so on. Their goal should be to master all of their addition facts (+0, +1, +2, etc...) so their fish can be in the large 10 fish tank! My students LOVE trying to get their fish to this tank! :) They then get an award to take home or hang up in the classroom.
Once students make it to the 10's tank they have mastered their sums to 20! They are now ready to start mastering their subtraction facts. You may either have them start their fish back at the empty fish tank as before to show their subtraction fact progress or you may have a separate set of fish bowls for subtraction. I included an addition and subtraction poster to place above each set if you want to separate them. As part of the common core standard, all students should be able to master their addition and subtraction facts to 20 by the end of second grade so I start this early in September.
