This is a ready-to-use, 33 page packet for teachers to use with their 4th-7th grade students who are reading We The Children, the first book in the Benjamin Pratt and the Keepers of the School series written by Andrew Clements. The major component in this packet is the master for creating a 16 page student booklet (yes, an answer key is also included!) which is designed to provide the student with a weekly guide that consists of the reading assignment for the week along with questions and activities to be independently completed during the week, either at home or in the classroom. Ideally, the assignment will be discussed and reviewed in a weekly literature circle setting (some classes might call this a book club meeting, novel study group, or a reading group) with the teacher, a classroom aide, a parent, or a student leader. The student booklet can be used with small groups of students who have chosen to read this particular book or with an entire class where all students are reading the same book.
Skills addressed in the student booklet are aligned with common core standards for both reading and writing (see highlighted details on next five pages) and include vocabulary, comprehension, questioning, evaluating, visualizing, inferring, determining character traits, understanding writing crafts, and describing the setting. Students are given opportunities to write both long and short responses, draw creatively, and complete a crossword puzzle. Created by Jean Martin.
Benjamin Pratt & The Keepers of the School:
We The Children in a Nutshell:
Andrew Clements has begun his Keepers of the School series with a story that is full of suspense. Ben aides an injured custodian and finds himself pulled into a swirling mystery and given the task to save the school from demolition. Then, his confidant dies and Ben is left to figure it all out!
Warning: this is the first book in a series and the end leaves the reader hanging at a suspenseful point in the story. If the reader believes this book is complete in and of itself, he/she may be frustrated by the ending! The teacher would be wise to have on hand some copies of the other books in the series for those students who cannot stand the suspense!
NOTE:I also have created reading workbooks for the other four books in this series: Fear Itself
, The Whites of Their Eyes
, In Harm's Way
, and We Hold These Truths
