It’s REAL WEATHER! REAL SCENARIO’S and REAL FORECASTING!
TEAM developed by both professional television meteorologists AND high school instructors specializing in the curricular fusion of both special education and gifted learning objectives.
Easy to teach, EFFECTIVE student learning, and APPLICABLE case studies to real world science.
This activity is about the connection between a surface high pressure system and storm (low pressure) development.
This particular activity is geared towards the role of a high pressure system and its associated “cold air damming” in the development and propagation of a typical Eastern United States snowstorm, aka “Nor’easter.”
Topics and concepts addressed:
-Surface high pressure (sinking air)
-Cold air damming phenomena
-Arctic high pressure versus polar high pressure
-Millibar measurement of air pressure
-Precipitation shield dynamics and variables (rain, sleet, freezing rain, and snow)
-Low pressure development and unique storm characteristics
-Role of geography and topography
-Air masses and fronts
-Doppler radar analysis
-Blizzard of 1993, 2003, 2016, and 2017
-Station model data
-Weather map interpretation and forecasting
Conclusion questions and knowledge application prompts are provided addressing higher level cognitive skills. These skills parallel what a professional meteorologist would evaluate during such storm events.
Fantastic for college prep, advanced, special education, and/or autistic-Asperger’s learners who need differentiated instruction or other non-traditional (direct instruction) pedagogical strategies.
Very special cut and paste, Smartboard, and/or Velcro and laminate activity that challenges many types of learners.
Can be infused easily into curriculum so learners that need an alternative assessment or may struggle with standard activities/labs/assessments have such an engaging option.
This activity has been used in all levels of classes: special education, general education, and advanced.
Perfect for homeschooling!
A great addition to your meteorology teaching library.
Used by teachers in New York State as a preparation for the Earth Science Grade 9 Regents Exam.
