Easy to teach, EFFECTIVE student learning, and APPLICABLE case studies to real world science.
This activity is about the connection between a surface low pressure system, particular atmospheric dynamics, and winter storm (snowstorm) development.
Topics and concepts addressed:
-Schematic of an East Coast Snowstorm (Nor’easter)
-Similarities and differences between a Miller A and Miller B storm
-Rules and atmospheric dynamics of a low pressure system in the Northern
-Case study of the snowstorm of March 18-20, 1956
-DETAILED heavy snow rules generally relative to a coastal snowstorm
-Differentiation between snow shield location, accumulation chances, precipitation zones and track of surface low pressure
-Case study of the blizzard of February 10-12, 1983 (The “Megalopolitan Storm”) impacting the cities of Richmond, VA, Washington D.C., Baltimore, MD, Philadelphia, PA, New York, NY and Boston, MA
-Case study of the Blizzard of March 13-15, 2017
Conclusion questions and knowledge application prompts are provided addressing higher level cognitive skills. These skills parallel what a professional meteorologist would evaluate during such storm events.
