Are your students studying natural hazards, weather or hurricanes? This hands-on Earth Science Weather STEM helps students design and create a model to prevent and reduce flooding during storms. It incorporates the engineering design cycle and includes a Hurricane Maria leveled text. Students use observations to write a learning report. Writing prompts round out this jammed packed set!
(Currently: 13 NGSS Aligned Projects)
❤ All STEM Projects are OPEN ENDED, allowing student flexibility to create and test unique designs. ❤
Student Directions Page: 2 Versions Included
The presented scenario sets students up to create their flood prevention/reduction solution.
Engineering Design Cycle Reflection: 2 Versions Included
Students will reflect about what they did as they worked through each part of the engineering design cycle.
Data & Testing Page:
After students have designed and constructed their model, they will test their design and draw conclusions, making modifications as necessary.
Engineering Learning Report: 2 Versions Included
Students will complete a one-page report detailing their model, applying mathematics, and conclusion.
The grading rubric allows teachers to assess how students created a model showcasing their design is effective in reducing/preventing flooding.
Science Leveled Passage: Hurricane Maria: Devastation to Puerto Rico 3 Leveled Texts
Students will read a leveled passage about the most disastrous hurricane to hit the territory island of Puerto Rico .
7 Venn Diagrams:
Students will use data and observation from their STEAM and understanding of flooding and water flow to complete the Venn Diagrams. Venns are also included to compare/contrast: hurricanes & earthquakes, snow & blizzard, flood & rain, sunny day & heat wave, tornado & windy
2 Research Writing Prompts:
Students draw on knowledge of hazardous weather gained during further research to complete the writing tasks.
5 Show What you Know: Reflective Task & Writing Prompt
Students will explain a solution that reduces the impact of weather-related damage in relation to: flood, tornado, blizzard, drought, and ice storms
Interactive Graphic Organizer: Hazardous Weather Vocabulary
