I love using virtual labs in my classroom, but an accompanying worksheet helps to slow them down and keep them honest so that they do not miss the entire point of the assignment. I have created this student guide to provide teachers with evidence of student learning as well as analysis questions that are designed to deepen student thought and assist with classroom discussion. This assignment is student centered and after a brief explanation students will be working independently and with purpose.
This worksheet is a companion to the Smithsonian Virtual Weather Lab, that can be found at the following link:
It both walks students through the simulation and has analysis questions that provide evidence of student comprehension of the Next Generation Science Standard MS-ESS 2-5 & 2-6
MS-ESS 2-5 Collect data to provide evidence for how the motions and complex interactions of air masses result in changes in weather conditions.
MS-ESS 2-6 Develop and use a model to describe how unequal heating and rotation of the Earth cause patterns of atmospheric and oceanic circulation that determine regional climates
