This is a 200 slide PowerPoint presentation with built-in class notes (red slides), challenge questions with answers, hands-on activities that students build and then use various weather tools, built-in review opportunities, games, two page homework, answer key, lesson notes, Isotherm worksheet with answers, and more.
This PowerPoint begins with a definition of Meteorology. A reference to how weather can be global, regional, and local is provided. Common weather tools are presented and visuals provided for each one. The first weather tool is the thermometer. A wind vane follows and an neat activity has the students try to build one with some common classroom materials with the assistance of a picture. More materials are handed to the students and they next see a picture of a anemometer and need to use the materials from the wind vane and new materials to build the anemometer. A 50/50 challenge occurs after the students learn about the Beaufort Scale. Students are each given an old cd or other token. They also have a whiteboard (paper will work). They are given a picture and need to determine the correct wind speed based on the Beaufort Scale. If they get it right they keep their token for the next round. The barometer is mentioned next and instructions on how to build one with simple classroom materials is provided. Isobars are also addressed with a series of visuals in a step by step process. Rain gauge, satellites, and weather balloons wrap up the weather tools. Students then learn what an Isotherm is and visit a website to create their own digital isotherm (link provided). This is a neat PowerPoint that involves the students in many activities throughout. Please see my other posting on TpT which is the Entire Weather and Climate Unit described below.
