General wind rules are broken down first into steps: Energy from the Sun-Uneven Heating-Differentiated Pressure Systems-Wind Direction According to Pressure Location-Naming of Local Winds Based on Direction.
The importance of differentiated heating and how land and water heat in unique ways is covered first. The notion of specific heat is then connected to this principle to reinforce the primary property of wind-differential heating through the processes of radiation, conduction, and convection.
The PowerPoint then resumes by focusing on the primary local winds with embedded interactive slides. Local winds addressed include:
-Texas Norther (Blue Norther)
-Desert Winds (Haboobs)
The PowerPoint concludes with the Coriolis Effect. An effect that is minimal concerning local winds but absolutely instrumental when it comes to global winds (large scale air movement).
A great addition to your meteorological teaching library.
Within the classroom, this activity has been consistently very successful and acclaimed by students in grades 6th – 12th within multiple types of schools - public, private, and charter.
Great feedback from parents, teachers, and administrators.
