Product Description

This 3-4 day fun and engaging NGSS mini-unit on WEATHERING (chemical and mechanical weathering) challenges students in a real world investigation to figure out how Earth’s surface has changed over time, specifically how mountains have changed shape from jagged to rounded due to weathering. Students draw models that answer the question, “How do mountains become rounded”, gather evidence in 4 lab investigations on weathering, read about mechanical and chemical weathering, and complete a cut-and-paste Interactive Notebook/foldable matching terms and definitions of examples of weathering. My students LOVE this mini-unit and they are highly engaged the entire time!

This mini-unit is aligned to the following NGSS Performance Expectations:

  • 4-ESS2-1. Make observations and/or measurements to provide evidence of the effects of weathering or the rate of erosion by water, ice, wind, or vegetation.
  • MS-ESS2-2. Construct an explanation based on evidence for how geoscience processes have changed Earth's surface at varying time and spatial scales.

Simple Materials Needed (trust me, it’s worth it!): Halite sample (links provided to order), plastic sandwich bag of water, 2 pans, 2 different kinds of rocks (sandstone works best but any will do as long as one can scratch the other), something with rust on it like a nail, 1 sugar cube per student, 1 plastic container with a lid per group, 1 marker per person, scissors, glue

Included in this resource:

  • 2 quality images of mountains
  • Student Worksheets
  • Reading section
  • 4 lab investigations
  • Cut-and-paste activity (Interactive Notebook/foldable)
  • Answer Keys
  • Teacher Tips
  • Links to order Halite sample
  • Pictures of completed Interactive Notebook/foldable
